Recycled or Bamboo Toilet Roll - Which One Wins Your Vote?

There's a debate that's been raging for years - is recycled toilet paper better for the environment than bamboo?  Let's break it down.

There's no denying that recycled toilet paper is far better for the environment than using virgin tree pulp.  Here's why:

  • Less water consumption - recycled TP uses almost half the water used in conventional TP production but it still uses a lot to wash, clean and de-ink the paper pulp
  • Reduces landfill waste
  • Uses less energy
  • Saves forests - no trees are cut down to make recycled TP
  • No chemical pulping or bleaching - recycled TP uses safer bleaching methods to give you that familiar white roll, and some companies offer unbleached recycled paper too
  • Can be made in the UK

So how does this compare to bamboo toilet paper?

  • Bamboo is highly sustainable and matures in 3-5 years, far quicker than trees - it needs to be mature so the cellulose fibers are strong enough to be used in paper production
  • Rapid regenerative growth and perennial root system - no need to keep clearing land and planting more
  • Bamboo absorbs more CO2 and produces more oxygen than trees - 35% more in fact!
  • Even less water consumption than recycled TP - wowsers!
  • Bamboo regenerates on its own and doesn't require replanting after harvesting
  • It requires no chemicals or pesticides to grow
  • Made in China but often shipped over sea to reduce the environmental impact - sea freight has a significantly lower carbon footprint per mile than air freight or long-haul trucking

What's the verdict?

Both are good options, and far better than traditional toilet paper manufacturing processes, so it really comes down to personal preference.    I would encourage you to try a few different UK companies if you're able, because they do each have a slightly different feel.  My personal favourites are Bazoo for bamboo toilet paper and Serious Tissues for a recycled option.
